YOUNG TALENT
Amy and Phoebe Matthews are two of the UK's most talented young drivers. Regular contributors to the CC, they are supported by their parents David & Verity, and have come up through the British Carriage Driving young drivers' training. Here they write about their successes at the 2023 Indoor Driving Finals - April 2023
I was really pleased to qualify Liberty for the indoor championships in the intermediate horse class via the Thames valley region. Liberty is a young homebred mare, we were incredibly proud of her performance, she was initially a little bit spooky going into the indoor dressage arena but soon settled although some of the boards may have been slightly rearranged! The cones course was very challenging in design and time. The obstacles were well built with plenty of different options available to drive. After the first two obstacles I had managed to gain 15 penalties moving up into third place, five points away from first position. After the second round of obstacles my final result was reserve intermediate horse, which I am incredibly proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all organisers and stewards (who were incredibly helpful and friendly). Yes there were a few issues but hopefully in future these will be rectified – Phoebe Matthews
The 2023 Indoor Championships were a great end to a competitive indoor season. Spud went very well all weekend and tried his absolute hardest in all three phases, I couldn’t have asked of any more from him. It was a great achievement and surprise to take the Supreme Champion in such a competitive class. I’m proud that all the other juniors drove so well and achieved very respectable results – Amy Matthews
