HACKNEY NEWS
Sally Redsell looks ahead to a busy season for the British Hackney Horse Society and lists some of the main shows where driven, ridden and in-hand Hackneys will be exhibited - April 2024

There’s good news from the Hackney Horse Society because this year we have an exciting calendar of events planned for our members as we are now entering the show season. We are all very relieved and grateful to have something to look forward to as it’s been a very long wet winter and I am sure everybody is ready for some sunshine and to get out and about showing again.
We have taken up the fantastic offer of a show ring for the whole day from the South Eastern Welsh Pony & Cob Association at their summer show to be held on 9th June 2024 at the Kent County Showground. The HHS will be able to offer a range of classes to include in-hand and driving, and this is a great opportunity for the Hackneys to go out and impress, and perhaps find a new audience. The Kent County showground offers good space and access for competitors and we are grateful to Angela Kember of the SEWPCA for this kind invitation.
Of course, our main event of the year is the Hackney Horse Breed Show held once again at the South of England Showground at Ardingly in Sussex, which is held over a few days from 4th to 7th June. This event returns to this regular venue and has a great family feel to it. There will be plenty of classes to choose from which include in-hand, wagons, ridden and private driving. We are expecting competitors from all over the country and for more information please contact Debbie Cooper online at admin@hackney-horse.org.uk.
Another date for the diary is the BDS Spring Bonanza show held at Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire on 12th May. This is an affiliated show and always has a great range of turnouts from Hackneys to Shetlands. There is overnight stabling and hook up and a rather good café onsite. For more information, contact BDS show director Julie Elliott on kenttiddy@btinternet.com.
